The Law & Unlocking Mobile Phones
We understand that some people will be confused about the current laws regarding the unlocking of mobile phones. We would like to assure all of our website visitors that we would never provide an illegal service. Before starting our service, we took great care to conduct extensive research into current UK laws regarding mobile telephony devices! There are
NO current laws in the UK which prohibits the unlocking of a mobile phone to enable the use of alternative Sim cards from other networks - it is the consumers legal right to have their phone unlocked!
Your Network Service Provider
Your network service provider (Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, O2 etc.) may have you believe that they MUST provide the unlock codes for your Nokia phone if you wish to unlock it! This could not be further from the truth. You can ask your network service provider to unlock your Nokia mobile phone, however they will normally charge you anything from £15.00 to £30.00!
Here's The Truth
Our extensive research has confirmed that the unlocking of a mobile phone for use on any network* is
NOT
illegal in the UK! When you decide that you would like to use an alternative network Sim card in your Nokia mobile phone, you need not stress about the legal implications as there aren't any!
Does Your Mobile Phone Belong To You?
Obviously, this applies only if the mobile phone in question is your legal property. If you obtained your mobile phone on contract, you should read on! Most people don't understand that the 'FREE' phone you obtained when you signed a 12 month contract does not become your legal property until you have completed the said 12 month contract! The same rule applies even if you have paid £70.00, £100.00 or even £200.00 for your contract phone - the phone remains the property of the network service provider until you have completed your 12 month contract. Therefore, we would advise all visitors with contract phones that they should check through their contract before using any unlocking service as there may be a clause prohibiting you unlocking your phone until it becomes your property!
Blacklisted, Blocked, Barred Or Stolen Phones
Unlocks.co.uk would never knowingly attempt to unlock any mobile phone which is blacklisted, blocked, barred or stolen! Mobile phones are blacklisted, blocked or barred for a specific reason - Usually because the phone is stolen, or the user has failed to pay their bills as per the contractual agreement. Unlocking a blacklisted, blocked, barred or stolen phone will have no effect whatsoever - it will remain blacklisted, blocked or barred after entering the codes we supply. It is illegal to attempt to unblock a mobile phone which has been blacklisted, blocked or barred, and we reserve the right to report to the necessary authorities the details of any mobile phone we believe to be stolen!
A Phones IMEI/Serial Number
The IMEI/Serial number of a mobile phone is the unique identifier of that particular device.
The Mobile Telephones (Re-programming) Act 2002
states quite clearly that it is considered a criminal offense if this number is interfered with or altered in any way. It is also an offence to be in the possession of any software or devices which could enable the user to interfere with or change a mobile phones IMEI/Serial number. Anyone attempting to interfere with or change the IMEI/Serial number of a mobile phone will face up to five years imprisonment, or a large fine, or maybe both! The only reason an IMEI/Serial number would be changed in this manner would be to conceal the original identity of the mobile phone. The only reason someone would wish to conceal the original identity of a mobile phone is if the mobile phone is stolen!
